Dumbo Octopus Facts

  • They are invertebrates, meaning they have no backbone.
  • They are usually only 8 inches long, shorter than a football (American, not a soccer ball).
  • They are called dumbo because of the two fins protruding from the sides of it’s head (mantle), making it look like dumbo from the Disney movie.
  • It has short arms, a bell shaped body and is almost always pale. It also often hovers over the bottom of the sea.
  • They live very deep in the sea, around 13,000 feet below the surface. They live deeper than any other octopus species.
  • They are carnivorous, they eat snails and worms, or anything else it can find small enough to eat.
  • They move by using their fins, unlike other octopuses which use jet propulsion to move (taking in water and using it to “jet” forward).
